[Minato holds out her hand for that high-five, but the Absol decides to use SCRATCH on it. An awkward silence ensues as she maintains her smile, though the corner of her lips twitches as if trying to suppress a wince of pain. She'll just... withdraw her hand... Ow...]

Ahahahaha! Looks like he really is only staying for the battles! Anyway, this Badge allows me to use Fly out of battle, right? I don't have a Pokemon with that move yet, but I wonder why you need a badge or HM? I mean... don't they fly already? Or maybe I'll get arrested by the Air Police if I try to cut corners? [She puts a hand on her chin thoughtfully.] It's such a mystery...

I know it makes no sense by most standards, but trying it without badge and HM simply does not work. I've had my Butterfree for over two years, and yet I cannot fly off with her no matter how much she wishes it.

What do you mean? Is it like you can't get anywhere that way or something?

Butterfrees cannot learn Fly. She has wings, she can fly, she's even a Flying-type, yet when she grabs my wrist and tries taking off it does not work. Even my Delibird can last a metre or two, and he's smaller.

What about big Pokemon with wings? I don't see how hard it can be to cut corners with that...

I had a Dragonite and an Altaria back then. Even they could do nothing.

More or less. They could not go higher up or forward, no matter how much they beat their wings.

Actually... Fly's a specific move for a pokémon. It let's it carry you to places you've been before and cuts out a lot of time travelling around.

Anyway! I know Fly's a move, but I was wonder why we need it if they can fly already. I mean, logically shouldn't they be able to fly people around if they're big enough and have wings? So I'm wondering what will happen if I would try without the HM or badge...

Nothing will happen if you do that. Because they won't know the move.

I know it doesn't make any sense, but most of Johto doesn't either.
